pride-day-flagPrEP 4 Pride

Are you ready for Pride? This year, you should seriously consider going on PrEP before the Pride parties start. PrEP is your best defense against contracting HIV. PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. Being on PrEP means you take one dose of an HIV drug called Truvada, once a day, every day. If you’re a gay man and sexually active with multiple partners, you’re a good candidate for PrEP. Even if you use condoms and practise safe sex, being on PrEP gives you extra protection from those ‘oops’ moments, and peace of mind. This Pride, get PrEP, stay safe & have fun.

Is PrEP safe?Is PrEP safe?

PrEP has been shown to be very safe when taken as directed. In fact, a recent study published in the Oxford Journal showed PrEP to be just as safe as Aspirin.  And, another study from Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco showed *zero* HIV infections among 600 men who were on PrEP for 2 ½ years.

3 Steps to Get Started on PrEP

3 Steps to get started on PrEP

  1. Make an appointment with your doctor to talk about going on PrEP.  Your doctor will probably ask you to get some blood work done to make sure you are a good candidate for Truvada. If you don’t have a doctor, The Village Pharmacy can recommend one for you.
  2. Get a prescription for Truvada from your doctor.
  3. Come in to The Village Pharmacy on Church Street to fill your prescription. You can count on us for help with insurance, counselling and to answer any questions you may have about being on PrEP.

is Truvada covered by Insurance?

Most insurance plans provided by your employer will cover the cost of Truvada, minus your co-pay.  If you do not have an insurance plan, The Village Pharmacy can help you assess your eligibility and access coverage through the Ontario Drug Benefits, Ontario Disability Support Program or Trillium. Ask us today about coverage.
