2023 Fall Update: New Vaccines

This fall, Ontarians have access to three vaccines to protect against common viruses: Flu shots, a new COVID-19 vaccine, and the RSV Vaccine.

The Village Pharmacy has all three vaccines in stock.

Book your appointment today. Call or email, and we’ll get you in right away.

Toronto Public Health recommends staying up-to-date with your vaccinations for the best protection from severe illness or hospitalization.

Those at higher risk include people who are immuno-compromised, have underlying health conditions, seniors, healthcare workers, pregnant or live / work in congregate settings such as nursing homes, hospices, etc. Getting vaccinated can help prevent severe illness and/or hospitalization.

Influenza

Peak flu season in Ontario is between December and February each year. Getting a flu shot reduces the risk of serious flu complications by 50% among adults.

Public Health Toronto recommends the high-dose flu vaccine for people 65 years of age and older. The Village Pharmacy carries both the regular dose and high-dose vaccines.

New COVID-19 Vaccine

The updated COVID-19 vaccine targets the XBB strain of the Omicron variant to boost protection against severe COVID-19 and may be better against currently circulating variants.

Verify you are eligible for the COVID-19 booster:

For adults and children who have been previously vaccinated, you are eligible to get the Fall 2023 COVID-19 booster if it has been 6 months or longer since your last booster or a known COVID-19 infection, whichever was later.

If you or your child has not received a COVID-19 vaccination before, you may start a vaccination (primary) series with the updated COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. Please speak to the pharmacist for more details.

The COVID-19 boosters by Moderna and Pfizer are equivalent and do not depend on your COVID-19 vaccine history

Both Moderna and Pfizer make the new Covid-19 MRNA vaccine that targets the XBB variant. Health Canada has authorized these as booster doses regardless of which vaccine was used for your primary series or previous boosters.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

RSV is a highly contagious viral cause of respiratory illness among older adults and children. This year, the first RSV vaccine approved by Health Canada, Arexvy, is now available for adults aged 60 and older. A recent clinical trial reported that a single dose was over 82% effective in preventing RSV lung infections among this age group and over 94% effective in preventing serious illness.

Is the RSV vaccine covered?
The RSV vaccine costs $280. It is not covered by OHIP.

Some insurance plans may cover the cost of this vaccine. You may wish to check with your plan before booking an appointment.

Get a Prescription for the RSV Vaccine from your Doctor:

You’ll need a prescription from your doctor for the RSV Vaccine. Ask your doctor to add a note on the prescription telling the pharmacist to administer the vaccine.
